Before Josh Risdon was representing Australia on the international stage, he was just a kid from Bunbury — lacing up his boots at Bunbury United and chasing the ball around with a dream.
His story is one that many young players in the South West can relate to. But what makes it truly special is how deeply connected it remains to the community that shaped him.
⚽️ Local Roots, National Dreams
Josh began his football journey in the heart of Bunbury, where his natural talent and work ethic quickly stood out. As a junior at Bunbury United, he developed the foundational skills — and love for the game — that would eventually see him rise through the ranks.
From there, it was a steady climb: representing WA at youth level, progressing to the A-League with Perth Glory, and eventually earning his spot in the national team. In 2018, Josh proudly represented Australia at the FIFA World Cup — an achievement that brought pride not just to his family, but to every local club and volunteer who supported his journey.
🌱 Why Local Football Matters
Stories like Josh’s are a powerful reminder that big dreams can grow from small clubs. They also show how vital our local football community is — the coaches who give up their weekends, the volunteers who run the line, the teammates who push each other to be better.
For young players in the South West, seeing someone from their own backyard make it to the world stage is more than just inspiring — it’s proof that the pathway exists.
🛣️ The Pathway Starts Here
At SWSA, we’re proud to be part of that pathway. From juniors to senior squads, our focus is on fostering a love for the game, developing skills, and creating opportunities for players to grow.
From Bunbury to the big leagues, it all began with a junior kit and a local club who believed in him. Josh's success is a tribute to the true power of grassroots football ⚽️ 💚
